Girls Only Football
Island Bay United is committed to ensuring that our female players get the most enjoyment out of football. We are working hard to build more opportunities and to build pathways into our successful women’s club.
Girls can choose to play in the mixed league on a Saturday, or to play in the Girls Only League that Capital Football runs on a Sunday, or both. Playing in both means paying two registration fees, but we offer a discount to reduce these costs.
For girls aged from 5 years old, the first opportunity to play football is as part of Fun football in the mixed grades on a Saturday.
Girls Only Sunday League (GOSL) grades are based on age turned in the calendar year and span two years. Island Bay United enters teams in U8, U10, U12 and U14 leagues. There is a Women’s U18 league that is suitable for young women aged from 14-18 years.
We also have a Girls Only Training and Development Programme known as the South Coast Girls Academy.
Girls Only Sunday League (GOSL)
Girls Only Sunday League matches are full of energy and focused on ensuring that all players have fun and learn new football skills. Each team requires a volunteer coach and manager, and more parent help is required to provide referees. Teams are generally organised to enable players to play alongside their people they know and who have a similar level of experience and commitment. There are no trials, and beginners are welcome at any age.
U8 teams play 5 a-side with no goalkeeper on a small pitch. All games are at Wakefield. The teams rotate around to play others in four mini 10 minute games, have fun and catch the football bug. No scores are recorded.
U10 teams play 7 a-side with a goalkeeper and rules that are close to the full version of the sport e.g. corners and throw ins. They play two games each Sunday and most teams organise a midweek practice with their volunteer coach. Other parents are needed to volunteer as on field referees.
U12 teams are 9 a-side and rules are as per the full version of the sport e.g. corners, throw-ins, off-side etc. There is a practice midweek and one match per Sunday, with two halves of 25 minutes. Away matches can start to be a bit further afield around Wellington.
U14 teams are now up to 11 a-side on a full field with full sized goals. Rules align with the full version of the sport. Some girls at this age will take part in both college and club football.

Women’s U18 youth football
From the age of 14 up, there is a league for young women to keep playing football, until they are ready to play with the women’s teams. The u18 league offers a very social and inclusive environment. Young women of all ages are welcome, including beginners. And it is completely compatible with playing secondary football, as College Girls’ football is scheduled for midweek.
From the age of 16, young women can also choose to train with and/or play for the women’s club.
